Flag

The flag and the coat of arms of the Theocratic Republic Athos is based of a historical origin. If she reminds strongly of the former flag of the byzantine empire (395 to 1461). Since that flag of Byzantium showed a golden double eagle on red ground, of the monk's republic a black double eagle on golden ground.

The double eagle was originally the symbol of roman ruler's power which found use also in flags of the russian czars, the "Holy Roman Empire German Nation" and the austrian-hungarian empire.
